Machine: Initially this word war the translation of the Greek mechanà a device used in the theatre to pop down the gods on the skené. For many centuries the term assumed a negative meaning, as "war machine"; hence the Italian "macchinazione".
Engine: "An artifact that by consuming a reseource changes the state of a system" (Vittorio Marchis). In this sense also Politics is an "engine". This term derives from the medieval French "engien" that is the vulgarisation of the Latin "ingenium".
